The inspirational Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo is definitely an inspiration. In fact I based a whole assignment on her in my first semester at la Universidad Católica de la Santísima de Concepcion. So this post is going to be in Spanglish since I’m going to directly copy parts of that assignment. Either way you should get the main point – she’s an inspiration.

So while I was in the middle of her birth country, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to pay her house a visit.

Frida was born and lived in Coyoacán, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Mexico City.

Technically she was born in 1907, but likes to claim she was born 3 years later at the beginning of the Mexican revolution.

But apart from her passionate political involvement, one of her greatest traits was as an independent woman -despite suffering polio and a costly tram crash. This strength comes across in a lot of her self portraits in the way she depicts herself and her thoughts.

This double portrait poses her vulnerability.

So now that her house and her type of paintings are out on the table, what makes her so inspirational. Obviously this is a personal response. So my answer to you is that she was strong to herself –

  • She painted who she was, as she was.
  • Despite being born in the early 20th century, she pursued only what she wanted to do -paint.
  • Despite her crash she got back up fighting.
  • Despite being warned against marrying coquettish Diego Rivera, she followed her heart and married him anyway.
  • Despite her nations political controversy, she strongly supported her own beliefs.

Clearly, it appears the odds were not in her favour, but she stayed true to herself. That is not always an easy feat today -despite living in the 21st century.
