North America

How many official continents do we have in the world?

In the midst of my year abroad, I sat around a table with a bunch of people from Germany, Australia, Mexico and Chile debating the amount of continents in our shared world. Are the America’s considered two continents or is it one big one? Those in Australia and Germany were taught our world has seven continents, North America starting with Panama to the north and separate from South America beginning with Colombia to the south. However, those from Mexico and Chile were taught there are five continents, excluding Antartica and including the Americas as one. This matches the five rings represented in the Olympics, symbolising the five inhabited continents and proving their argument that the Americas are joined as one continent.

For my online journal I have followed my Australian education and separated North America from South America. I have included posts from:

Mexico

United States of America
